What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Adonidia merrillii, Veitchia merrilli, Christmas Palm

Click to see full-size image Adonidia merrillii, Veitchia merrilli
Family: Arecaceae / Palmae
Christmas Palm
Origin: Philippines
Big tree > 20 ftFull sunRegular waterPalm or palm-likeSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeSeaside, salt tolerant plant

Adonidia comes from Adonis, the handsome sun god of the ancient Greeks. This is neat looking, compact palm that resembles a dwarf version of the royal palm (Roystonea regia) which it matches in beauty. Christmas palm grows to an overall height of only about 16 ft. By late fall fruit are beginning to ripen and by late December are bright and brilliant red - like ornaments on a Christmas palm! It is a popular landscaping item in the capital of Philippines, which inspires another popular name, the Manila palm.

Christmas palm is moderately salt tolerant. Prefers full sun but will take some shade.

Small stature makes it perfect for use in small scale plantings. It is sometimes closely planted in groups of two or three.

Good specimen container plant. The formal symmetry of Christmas palm is nicely showcased when it is grown in a container. Indoors or out this is a glamourous container plant that can maintain its looks despite hardship and neglect.

Adonidia merrilli variegata - var Philippine Gold

Variegated Christmas Palm. This is the extremely rare variegated version of the Christmas palm native to the Philippines. Incredibly easy to maintain this palm needs only a tropical environment and soil that isn't soggy to thrive. It is able to adapt to a wide variety of growing conditions including being moderately salt tolerant. It prefers a sunny spot but will handle some shade. Self cleaning, this neat and tidy pinnate palm has a short green crownshaft under a dozen or so recurved leaves atop a grey leaf scarred trunk that's slightly swollen at the base. Its red seeds mature in December around Christmas - hence the nickname. Unlike most variegated plants, this form comes 90% true to seed. Needs a good mixture of sun and shade to look its best.
Adonidia is a neat looking, compact palm that resembles a dwarf version of the Royal palm (Roystonea regia) which it matches in beauty. It grows to an overall height of only about 16 ft. By late fall fruit are beginning to ripen and by late December are bright and brilliant red - like ornaments on a Christmas palm! Small stature makes it perfect for use in small scale plantings.
