Adenium hybrids - many varieties, Grafted

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Baobab starter, 3 years old. Perfect gift plant!
Baobab, also called the Tree of Longivity, can live for 5000 years. Pass this remarkable plant in your family from generation to generation! Regarded as the largest succulent plant in the world, the Baobab tree is steeped in a wealth of mystique, legend and superstition wherever it occurs in Africa, being a tree that can provide food, water, shelter and relief from sickness. In the nature the massive, usually squat cylindrical trunk gives rise to thick tapering branches resembling a root-system, which is why it has often been referred to as the Upside-down Tree.
Planting directions: pot into 6" container or shallow bonsai dish using well drained bonsai mix, like Adenium soilless mix. Water well and put in bright light, full sun is preferable. Let soil dry between waterings. Fertilize once a month during warm season, with a balanced granulated fertilizer and Sunshine boosters: SUNSHINE-BC for fast growing thick trunk, and SUNSHINE SuperFood. As the plant grows, step up into bigger container after proper trimming of roots and branches.
Thanks to its internal water supply, the Baobab Tree can take several months without soil. The plants are shipped bare-rooted to save your shipping costs.

Adansonia grandidieri - Grandidiers Baobab

Can be used for bonsaiBig tree > 20 ftFull sunModerate waterWhite/off-white flowersDeciduousEdible

Adansonia grandidieri, sometimes known as Grandidiers baobab, is the biggest and most famous of Madagascars six species of baobabs. This imposing and unusual tree is endemic to the island of Madagascar, where it is an endangered species threatened by the encroachment of agricultural land. Grandidiers baobabs have massive cylindrical trunks, up to 10ft across, covered with smooth, reddish-grey bark. They can reach 100 ft in height. At certain times of the year the flat-topped crowns bear bluish-green palmate leaves, dark brown floral buds or spectacular flowers with white petals. The large, dry fruits of the baobab contain kidney-shaped seeds within an edible pulp. A. grandidieri is named after the French botanist and explorer Alfred Grandidier.

Albuca spiralis Frizzle Sizzle

CaudexCan be used for bonsaiGroundcover and low-growing 2ftSmall shrub 2-5 ftFull sunShadeSemi-shadeModerate waterFragrant

This is one of the coolest plant you've ever grown! Albuca spiralis Frizzle Sizzle (the Corkscrew Albuca) is a South African bulb selection with green onion-like leaves that look like they were curled with a curling iron. Each plant has its own personality...some have short, tightly curled leaves, others have taller, looser curled leaves. Over time, the bulb will multiply, resulting in a full, very wild and wacky clump. Albuca spiralis blooms in the spring with spikes of orchid-like chartreuse-yellow flowers. On occasion, Albuca Frizzle Sizzle will rebloom later in the season. Not only is this a fun plant that will capture the attention of everyone who sees it, but it is super easy to grow, too. Treat it like a succulent. Lots of sun, well draining soil, and let the soil dry between waterings. Hot and dry conditions seem to encourage the most extreme leaf coils. In norther climates, Albuca spiralis Frizzle Sizzle is easily over wintered indoors on a sunny window sill. Or stop watering, let the bulb go dormant, and store in a cool, dry location. Fragrant yellow flowers appear in spring on flower spikes that are adorned with 10-20 blooms per spike. The blossoms have a light vanilla fragrance. Grow in full sun and allow the soil to dry out between waterings. There are no pest or disease problems with Frizzle Sizzle so it makes an ideal home garden plant that’s distinctive and eye-catching.

What seems to be a caudex is just the large nut which will disappear by time. The young leaves are a beautiful bronze with pinkish veins. Old leaves turn yellowish. The flowers are delightful puff balls of white stamens tipped with pink. They open at night and attract large moths and nectar-feeding bats with their heavy scent.
