6360 Adonidia merrilli variegata - var Philippine Gold Variegated Christmas Palm. This is the extremely rare variegated version of the Christmas palm native to the Philippines. Incredibly easy to maintain this palm needs only a tropical environment and soil that isn't soggy to thrive. It is able to adapt to a wide variety of growing conditions including being moderately salt tolerant. It prefers a sunny spot but will handle some shade. Self cleaning, this neat and tidy pinnate palm has a short green crownshaft under a dozen or so recurved leaves atop a grey leaf scarred trunk that's slightly swollen at the base. Its red seeds mature in December around Christmas - hence the nickname. Unlike most variegated plants, this form comes 90% true to seed. Needs a good mixture of sun and shade to look its best.Adonidia is a neat looking, compact palm that resembles a dwarf version of the Royal palm (Roystonea regia) which it matches in beauty. It grows to an overall height of only about 16 ft. By late fall fruit are beginning to ripen and by late December are bright and brilliant red - like ornaments on a Christmas palm! Small stature makes it perfect for use in small scale plantings. Good specimen container plant. The formal symmetry of Christmas palm is nicely showcased when it is grown in a container. Indoors or out this is a glamourous container plant that can maintain its looks despite hardship and neglect.
